Demystifying Skincare: Organic vs. Natural

One of the most common misconceptions in the skincare world is the interchangeable use of the terms “natural” and “organic.” In reality, there’s a distinct difference, particularly when we delve into the realm of certified organic skincare as defined by Australian Certified Organic.

In terms of skincare performance, there’s little disparity between natural and organic products. You’re unlikely to discern a visible difference in skin condition simply based on whether a product is certified organic or not. However, my passion for certified organic ingredients and sustainable skincare stems from their environmental and ethical implications—a facet your customers might find equally compelling.

Many of the natural and organic ingredients we utilize are sourced from regions along the equator, where warm, humid climates foster rapid plant growth. However, the ethical considerations surrounding ingredient sourcing are paramount. As a formulator, I grapple with questions about the origins of my ingredients. Was deforestation involved in establishing plantations? Were local communities displaced? Was child labor employed? Were fair wages paid to workers? Were harmful chemicals used in farming, with detrimental effects on local ecosystems?

Certification by an independent third party, such as ACO, offers assurance of ethical and sustainable practices throughout the supply chain. While organic skincare may not inherently outperform other natural products, the knowledge that it adheres to stringent ethical and environmental standards provides peace of mind.

Ultimately, the question boils down to consumer preferences. As awareness of sustainability grows, I anticipate—and hope—that an increasing number of customers will seek out organic products. The Australian Certified Organic Standard stands as a beacon of excellence in organic production, offering consumers confidence in the integrity of their skincare choices.
